As a youngster Mike was something of an all-round athlete. He was a champion swimmer, boxer and rugby league player before a rugby injury forced him to concentrate on golf. He won the North Queensland Junior title twice, and was runner up in the 1969 Australian Boys' Championship before turning professional in 1973 and going on to win over 15 professional titles, including the 1977 Western Australia Open, the 1978 Papua New Guinea Open, the 1979 Illawarra Golf Classic, the 1980 Rolex Open in Geneva, the 1981 Queensland PGA Championship, and the 1985 Accom Doubles tournament in Japan.
Mike appears in the Australian edition of the Guinness Book of Records having teamed up with fellow Seniors Tour member, Simon Owen, to play the fastest round in a major Australian tournament by players scoring par or better. They took just one hour and 56 minutes to achieve that feat at the 1985 Australian Masters at Huntingdale GC, Melbourne. Mike is brother-in-law to the late professional golfer, Payne Stewart. He is coached by the legendary Charlie Earp. Earned his European Seniors Tour card by finishing 11th at the 2001 Qualifying School at Pinta.
Mike is the 2002 Australian Seniors Champion and the 2003 Malaysian Seniors Champion.
Mike played in the inaugural 2003 Asian Seniors Masters in Singapore and finished 6th.
