Born in Durban in the Kwazulu Natal province on17th March 1947. Stayed in all provinces of South Africa because of father's occupation as minister in church. Finished school in 1965 and spent 1966 in Army for compulsary army training.
Married wife Lucia in 1970 and have one daughter Alet (1972) and two sons Ruan (1974) and Adriaan (1978). Proud grandfather of two granddaughters Luricia (29/7/2003) and Nikha (11/3/2005).
In earlier years, played tennis at provincial level and only started golf at age of 31. Played provincial amateur golf up to September 1998. Also won SA Senior Amateur title in 1997 and visited Northern Ireland as senior amateur national player. Participated in 1999 British Senior Open at Royal Portrush after qualified 3rd at Castle Rock.
Order of merit winner for the satelite senior tour Ladies & Legends for 2004.
Financial considerations prevented overseas participation. Gained fourth position in the last four SA Senior Open tournaments. Also well known for organisational efforts in golf and held the position of SA Senior Tour secretary for two and a half years. Responsible for maintaining SA Amateur player rankings and most golfing tournament software used in South Africa. Qualified R&A Rules Official officiated in various provincial amateur events as well as SA Amateur championships. Was chief referee in the SA Junior Championships earlier the year.
When not involved in playing golf, keeps himself busy by writing computer software for the golfing industry.
Other hobbies include Chess (SA Junior Champion 1965), Bridge, Amateur Wrestling, Artificial Lure Fishing and sport in general. Rinus played in the 2003 Asian Senior Masters in Singapore as well as the 2004 Taiwan Senior Open in Taipei.
